If you become pregnant, your GP will refer you to see our Midwife for a ‘booking-in appointment’, at which you will be asked a few questions and have some general health checks performed. You will be seen at regular intervals during your pregnancy either at the practice, or at the local hospital, or both.

Follow up midwife appointments

Child Health & Immunisation

The baby clinics at Throckley are drop-in sessions where no appointments to see the Health Visitor or Nursery Nurse are necessary (although immunisations are only with the Practice Nurse on a Tuesday and should be booked in advance). Parents are asked to book their baby in with the receptionist on arrival for all of the sessions.

Babies or preschool children can attend the weekly clinics. This is where infants and young children can have their feeding, growth, behaviour and development monitored and reviewed.

The Health Visitor can also sometimes provide support for parents of preschool children who may be experiencing difficulties.

Time: Wednesday
9.30a.m. – 11.00a.m.

Led by our nursing team, this clinic offers advice and general health check-ups to patients diagnosed with diabetes.
Please make an appointment with the Practice Nurse or doctor to discuss your needs.

Patients with asthma can make an appointment for advice and support (including checks on how effectively you are using your inhaler) from our nurses who specialise in asthma care.

NHS Health Checks

This free NHS Health Check is to available to everyone between the ages of 40 and 74 every 5 years to assess your risk of developing heart disease, stroke, diabetes and kidney disease. The good news is that these conditions can often be prevented – even if you have a history of them in your family.

What happens at the check?

  • The check will take about 20 minutes
  • We’ll record your height, weight, age, sex and ethnicity
  • We’ll take your blood pressure
  • We’ll do some simple blood tests to check your cholesterol, liver & kidney function and a test for diabetes.

What happens after the check?

We arrange for Chris the practice pharmacist to ring you to discuss your results when the tests have been reported on, usually within the next 3 working days.

We offer a full range of contraception services, including fitting of  Implanon/Nexplanon implants. Please see your Practice Nurse or doctor to discuss further.

We offer free condoms and free screening for chlamydia infection – without needing an appointment. Please speak to Reception, your doctor or the Practice Nurse for further details.

Weight Management

We offer a weight management service to help those wishing to lose weight. Please ask to see our Healthcare Assistant or one of the Practice Nurses if you would like an appointment. Advice regarding healthy eating and exercise will be given. If appropriate you may be referred to see a GP for a prescription to help you lose weight.
